Chapter 6- Building A Connected Learning Community and Nursing: Vanna Kelly

In Chapter 6, “Building Your Connected Learning Community,” Ralph Waldo Emerson highlights the importance of learning through connection with others. The reading explains that knowledge is not just gained alone, but also by building relationships and sharing ideas. A connected learning community allows people to grow, exchange perspectives, and support one another. By interacting with others in a learning environment, students gain confidence, new skills, and a stronger sense of purpose.

As an aspiring nursing student, this chapter connects directly to my future career. Nursing is all about teamwork and communication, both with other healthcare professionals and with patients. Building a connected learning community in school helps prepare me for working in a hospital or clinical setting where collaboration is essential. Nurses rely on each other for advice, encouragement, and problem-solving, just like students do in a connected learning space. This shows me how valuable it is to practice building strong learning networks now.

This chapter matters to me because it shows how learning with others creates long-term success. In nursing, I will always need to stay updated with new knowledge, and that is easier when I am part of a connected community of professionals. By practicing this now in school—working with classmates, sharing resources, and learning from different perspectives—I am preparing myself to be a better nurse. A connected learning community not only strengthens my education but will also support my growth as I continue in my career.

  1. Hi Vanna! This was a really nice reflection on the reading as you summarize the main points while also give an interesting take on teamwork for the nursing perspective. I never realized that nursing involved so much teamwork but you stating how nursing is really big on communication and teamwork since you are working with the doctors, other nurses as well as the patients as well as their families. I also liked how you found the similarities in being a student to being nurse as school prepares you for that social part aside from the education.

  3. Hi Vanna!
Great response! I like how you connected the work of Ralph Waldo Emerson to your future career as a nurse. When working in health care, forming a connection with your coworkers is essential to having an effective work environment, especially one that is efficient, quick, and reliable. Through this chapter, we really focus on the importance of forming bonds and the knowledge relationships truly give you. I am a health science major, so I understand how crucial it is to learn from others and also teach those around you. Working in medical care can be difficult and overwhelming, but with the uplifting attitudes and guidance from individuals around you, the outlook you have on your career can change for the better!
