Technology Blog #3: Emerson’s Chapter 5 — Finding Self-Reliance in Nursing
Ralph Waldo Emerson’s Chapter 5 focuses on the importance of self-trust and inner strength. He encourages readers to rely on their own judgment rather than simply following what others believe. Emerson’s writing serves as a good reminder that true growth comes from within — by learning through our own experiences and believing in our ability to make choices confidently. This message of independence and reflection is something that can be applied in many parts of life, especially in personal development and career growth.
In the “Our Stories” section that introduces this chapter, the theme of personal growth through self-understanding stood out to me. Emerson emphasizes that everyone’s path is unique, and that we become stronger by embracing our individuality. In nursing, this mindset is incredibly important. Every nurse faces challenges that require quick decisions, emotional strength, and confidence in their training. Emerson’s ideas about self-reliance connect to how nurses must trust their instincts and judgment when caring for patients, especially in stressful or uncertain situations.
As a future nurse, I see a clear connection between Emerson’s philosophy and the nursing profession. Nursing requires not only skill and knowledge but also compassion, resilience, and trust in one’s own abilities. Emerson’s belief in the power of the individual reminds me that even when faced with difficult shifts or complex patients, confidence and self-reflection can guide better care. Just like Emerson taught that growth comes from within, nurses grow stronger by learning from every experience and trusting their sense of purpose in helping others.
Vanna, I enjoyed reading your response. Personal growth through self understanding is extremely important in order to build confidence but also learn how to stay humble as well. Everyone is on their own path designed uniquely to them, and even though they might not directly interfere with one another, each individual becomes stronger through their individuality. I find this to be important because what I was taught growing up was, "Do you want to be a follower? Fit in, be like everyone else, and not be able to make decisions based upon an opinion formatted all on your own? Or would you rather be a leader? Stick up for what is right, be yourself, and create your own opinions and destiny?" Individuality is important as it really does define us and uniquely us, I know I definitely chose to be more like a leader than a follower and because of that, I embrace my differences and individuality.
