Good/Bad Website Smackdown
Netflix vs Crackle
For my Smackdown project, I decided to compare two streaming websites: Netflix and Crackle. Netflix is super clean and easy to use — everything is laid out clearly, it’s easy to find shows or movies, and the thumbnails look aesthetically pleasing. Crackle, on the other hand, is kind of a mess. There are tons of ads and random promotions all over the homepage, and it’s hard to figure out where to click to get to the content you actually want. It’s a good example of how design really affects how people use a website.
Looking at these sites made me realize how important layout and navigation are, even for things we just use for fun. Netflix is a good example of a site that’s easy to get around and actually enjoyable to use, which is something you could analyze in a class about web design or marketing. Crackle is the opposite — too much clutter, confusing menus — so it’s a good case study for what not to do.
Knowing the difference between sites like Netflix and Crackle is useful if you ever work in web design, marketing, or any kind of digital business. Netflix shows how clean design keeps people coming back, while Crackle shows how bad layouts and too many distractions can make users frustrated. Comparing them can help you think about why some websites work and why others don’t.

Hi Vanna! Although Netflix is a paid service, I do value its clean website interface as it really does make the user experience better than free websites like Crackle. Ads can also be a safety concern, especially when they are excessive and popping up constantly. Great presentation!
ReplyDeleteI liked how instead of a website, you chose streaming services. These are definitely on the rise compared to cable TV and there are so many different services to choose from. Personally, I use Netflix, Hulu, Apple TV, and Tubi so I have never heard of Crackle. After reading your blog and watching your Smackdown, I think I’ll stay away from it too. Easy navigation definitely makes a difference when trying to choose a show or movie to watch.
ReplyDeleteHi Vanna!
ReplyDeleteGreat presentation! I use Netflix all of the time and find it super easy to use, visually appealing, as well as very quick to load. I have never heard of Crackle before, but from your presentation I can see how cluttered and unorganized this website is. Netflix has categories to find what you are looking for and is very modern, which is why I choose it over other websites. Nice job!
Crackle has a significant lower library than Netflix, which for someone who wants to explore something to watch is a big downside. Netflix also has Original shows and movies that you can't get anywhere else and has no ads, unlike Crackle with what you said having many pop up ads. Netflix also just is very easy to navigate and simple to look at.
ReplyDeleteVanna Kelly, as much I love the idea of not paying for streaming platforms, in the end you are still paying with your time. As you described in your smackdown the free platforms take much longer time to load, and while you’re waiting you get bombarded with those pop ups and commercials. Some of those ads can be very inappropriate too, especially if you have small children around. I think you choose the perfect comparison between the two streaming platforms and you prove your point really well.
ReplyDeleteHey Vanna! I have never even heard of Crackle, and that's probably for all of the reasons you talked about, haha! Just the ads and design alone would turn me off from ever using it. I love Netflix's design. I could spend hours looking through it!
ReplyDeleteHi Vanna,
ReplyDeleteI've explored a few streaming websites, but Crackle hasn't been one of them. As someone who likes free streaming, I think Tubi is similar to Crackle, but with much less annoying ads and a decent library.
